It’s the day after Black Friday and you might have a consumer hangover, buyer’s remorse or be just plain broke. Or maybe you have been saving all your gifting for Small Business Saturday, today! In either case, you are inevitably pinching pennies and could use some tips to spend less while giving more. Enter the DIY gift guide...
Not only is it fun to craft but if done right you can create covetable works of art that your giftees will cherish, while you get to humble brag. It’s all about choosing the right design, materials and approach. Below I’ve curated a collection of DIY gifts with full tutorials and supplies that are simple, chic and affordable...sure to nab you some oohs and ahs.
Pom Pom Earrings
Call it a lifetime obsession with Dr. Seuss or just a love of all things pop but I can get with this pom pom earring trend. It’s all about choosing the right colors, size and earring accessories. This tutorial makes a recommendation to purchase a nifty pom pom maker (who knew?) but you can make your own. If you are looking for inspiration, I can not get enough of the adorable little puffs at Bando.
Recently, I attended the craft fair called Patchwork. It was so full of macrame that I wanted to put on a kaftan, eat brewer’s yeast and chant The Future is Female. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m referring the amazing era of the 1970s where the women’s liberation movement really began. And if you’re wondering why it’s taken this long...yeah, #metoo. Otherwild is a shop that epitomizes the classic macrame aesthetic – and is the shop behind the rerelease of the now famous t-shirt – amongst other boundary pushing wares. So get your organic quinoa in a ceramic bowl and start weaving.
Wooden Twig Ornaments
These beautiful and simple ornaments seem right out of Crate and Barrel minus the $100 dollar price tag. Just go foraging for twigs on your next hike, cut up a cloth napkin and picking up some fancy yarn. Then tada! Gotcha, capitalism.
Paper Snowflake Ornaments
Again, less is more here. These paper ornaments are incredibly simple to make and once you add a little gold paint, you have an ornament that will sparkle with love, and your (not so hard) work. Don’t be intimidating by the website. It looks like it’s in Polish but the photos tell you everything you need to know.
I never thought the air plant trend would last this long but I guess I underestimated how lazy we all are. I have one and actually look at it often and just and marvel at its beauty, and really, how it stays alive. But I don’t have to know, I just get to spray it with water. Yay. These lovely little air plant carriers are so adorable that you might have a cute overload when you deliver this gift. I also saw that you can get a 15 pack for less than $20 on Amazon. Yay forever!
Put a Pom Pom on it!
What do a DVD and a pom pom have in common? This little creation! You will have to take a look at the tutorial to understand but I thought this was such a simple yet stylish way to wrap a gift – and incorporate more pom poms...always more pom poms!
Lastly, after all that hard work, you deserve a drink! Actually, I’m a fan of enjoying crafting with...craft cocktails! Let’s go there. This particular drink looked delicious with a grapefruit pomegranate combination but there is a huge list of other options so I’m sure you’ll find a yummy libation to inspire your DIY creations.
I hope you enjoy your holidays and find a way to DIY-it! I'm not a huge fan of buying gifts that stress you out by their mere price tag but I am a fan of beautiful things. I don't think one has to cancel out the other. I hope these suggestions inspire you to enjoy a holiday full of beautiful things, your way. I would love to see any creations you make so please "humble brag" below and spread the word! xoL
